A destroyer escort is among the smallest of warships, but the USS Tabberer has the heart of a giant. A typhoon threatens the US Fleet in the Pacific during World War II, days before Christmas. The men of the Tabberer stand tall as they rush to the aid of their fellow sailors. For Seaman Jerry Collier, the typhoon prompts a greater awareness of what he wants in life. First, though, they have to survive.
A Dr. in the House
Emma O’Sullivan is one of the first female doctors to enlist after President Franklin Roosevelt signs the order allowing women in the Army and Navy medical corps. Within weeks, Emma is assigned to England to set up a convalescent hospital, and she leaves behind everything that is familiar. When the handsome widower of the requisitioned property claims she’s incompetent and tries to get her transferred, she must prove to her superiors she’s more than capable. But she’s soon drawn to the good-looking, grieving owner. Will she have to choose between her job and her heart?

This unique and diverse trio of Christmas-themed novellas share in the common themes of hope, faith and love. These excellent authors’ works make for an excellent compilation and a very pleasant read. Each story is written in such a way as to leave the reader definitely wanting more!
As demonstrated in Picking a Bride for Paul sometimes it takes a while for love to truly open one’s eyes but as this story unfolds the reader will hold out hope that true love wins out over a parent’s best intentions. Written with clever foreshadowing, this easy to read novella is a western-themed winner!
Typhoon Prompting highlights more of author Terri Wangard’s well-written and spot-on historical accuracy which brings creative personalization to this story based on actual events. This novella brings reality right up close and reminds us as the author says, “At least Christmas assured them they’d have the possibility of reunion in eternity. That was the good tidings of great joy that made Christmas was it was. For unto you is born this day in the city of David, a Savior, which is Christ the Lord. They didn’t need decorated trees or gaily wrapped gifts. They didn’t need to be home to celebrate.”
This is a highly memorable and engaging read from one of my favorite authors!
A Doctor in the House is written with excellent descriptions where vivid emotions are portrayed in this touching and memorable wartime Christmas story told from both an American and British perspective. As each character wrestles with their conflicting emotions and relies on their strong faith, the vicar’s quote “God can make something good of this ordeal.” certainly rings true for each.
This is a story ripe to be continued and I certainly look forward to reading more about Archie, Emma and the rest of their wartime compatriots.
